Brief History of Kazakh National Medical University (KNMU):

Foundation in 1930:

  • The decision to establish a medical institute in Alma-Ata was made through the Decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the RSFSR on July 10, 1930.
  • Alma-Ata Medical Institute was included in the list of higher educational institutions in the appendix, marking the initiation of the university.

Leadership and Initial Staff (1930-1931):

  • Sanzhar Dzhafarovich Asfendiyarov, a graduate of the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg, was appointed as the director by the People’s Commissariat of Health of the KASSR in 1930.
  • The institute's initial staff included 5 professors, 4 associate professors, 13 assistants, and 2 teachers, with notable figures like Asfendiyarov S.D. and A.I. Malinin.

Pediatric Faculty (1938):

  • Responding to a shortage of pediatric doctors, a pediatric faculty was established in 1938, led by Professor A.I. Malinin.

Recognition and Renaming (1981-1989):

  • The institute was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1981.
  • In 1989, by the decree of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR, it was named after S.D. Asfendiyarov.

National University Status (2001):

  • The university was granted the status of Kazakh National Medical University by the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nazarbayev N.A., in 2001.

Diversification and Specialization (2004-2007):

  • In 2004, the university introduced the specialty "Management," followed by undergraduate programs in "Medicine" and "Nursing" from 2007.

International Collaborations:

  • KNMU has signed cooperation agreements with prestigious universities worldwide, fostering academic ties with institutions in Japan, Singapore, Italy, Austria, Kyrgyz Republic, Ukraine, and Russia.

Aksai Children's Clinic:
Over 5 thousand children from all over the Republic, received medical care in Aksai Children's Clinic. More than 2000 complex operations are performed there.

Professor's clinic:
Annually about thousand inpatients and 25 thousand outpatients are treated at the Professor's clinic. Specialists with over thirty years of work experience not only treat and care for patients but also train young doctors and held research works. The center for innovative medicine was recently opened at the clinic, which performs unique, minimally invasive operations. In 2019 the Professor's Clinic of KazNMU started managing the Ophthalmological Center. Here a full range of surgical and therapeutic ophthalmic services will be provided. Experienced ophthalmologists conduct comprehensive eye examinations and specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of various eye diseases. The center is equipped with ultramodern equipment.

The Clinic of Internal Diseases is the leading one in Kazakhstan in the field of internal pathology:
hepatology, rheumatology, endocrinology. A unique diabetes center in the clinic and a multidisciplinary approach to managing patients with diabetes are implemented.
