The roots of WKSMU trace back to 1957 when Aktobe State Medical Institute (ASMI) was established, answering the call for qualified medical professionals in Western and North-Western Kazakhstan. Dr. A.B. Dairov, a distinguished academician, served as the first rector, laying the foundation for a robust medical education system.

Over the years, WKSMU has evolved under the leadership of visionary rectors, witnessing significant milestones such as the completion of essential infrastructure, the opening of new faculties, and the recognition as an academy in 1997. Renamed in honor of Marat Ospanov, an esteemed figure in Kazakh politics, WKSMU continues to uphold its commitment to medical education and research.

Language of Instructions:

Many of the medical subjects are taught in the English medium at West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University. However, some clinical lectures from 3rd year will be in the Kazakh or Russian medium compulsorily. This is common all over Kazakhstan and other Russian countries as per the instructions given by their respective Government. That is why the Kazakh/Russian language is also taught in the Universities right from 1st year till 3rd year. It helps the students to communicate with the patients in their hospital classes. Mostly all exams are taken in the English language and some in the Kazakh/Russian at WKSMU.
